What Would Joan Didion Do? What would she pack? According to “The White Album”:
TO PACK AND WEAR:
2 skirts
2 jerseys or leotards
1 pullover sweater
2 pair shoes
stockings
bra
nightgown, robe, slippers
cigarettes
bourbon
bag with:
shampoo
toothbrush and past
Basis soap
razor, deodorant
aspirin, prescriptions, Tampax
face cream, powder, baby oil
TO CARRY:
mohair throw
typewriter
2 legal pads and pens
files
house key
I’m packing now for the first leg of the tour, the West Coast leg, and I want to get it right—enough stuff, but not too much. Good stuff, the right stuff. Her list is a nice list. Kyle and I will be staying in Hollywood first. That is where she was living when she wrote this.

I always wanted to be able to pack like this, but I have yet to pull it off. Maybe on my next trip to NYC.
